I’m somebody whose dream for many years was just to quit waiting tables. It’s a wild thing to hustle for so many years and start achieving some real milestones when you’re almost 50. And that’s really the whole basis of the show-if you really love something, don’t give up on yourself.Īfter working your way through the comedy scene over the past two decades, how does it feel to be having a breakout moment at this stage in your career? Because if one night you’re selling the specials at Ocean Grill on the Upper West Side and the next night you’re playing a sold-out house at Joe’s Pub, you’ve just gotta keep your head down and keep going. I saw him being interviewed by Oprah and he said, “You know, O, D.D.H.D.-Dreams Don’t Have Deadlines.” I was so gripped by it, and now I have it engraved on a piece of jewelry. I always make sure to attribute that to LL Cool J. I wanted to ask about your mantra, “Dreams don’t have deadlines”. Plus, we were shooting 12 scenes a day and moving very quickly, so there wasn’t any time for me to doubt myself. I thought, “Wait, I’m an executive producer and number-one on the call sheet, they can’t fire me!” I was able to live in the moment and just hope for the best. I showed up on the first day of Somebody Somewhere worried I might let everybody down, but it was such a supportive environment. I’ve lived a life full of self-doubt, but I’ve been able to let go of a lot of those feelings of unworthiness. You come off so naturally confident, but did you relate to that aspect of your character? Just trust yourself and give it your best.”Ī moment in the show that really struck me is when Sam says she never let her sister hear her sing because she didn’t think she was any good. I’ve had a lot of people along the way going “Bridget, you’re better than you think you are. Because in real life, I just walk into a room and go, “Nobody wants me here, should I just leave?” I was actually so nervous to do Patti Cake$ that I tried everything I could to get out of it. When I was building my stage character, I was trying to make a confident person who could step into her body and her power and feel on the edge of being alive. You’ve done some really fabulous dramatic work in projects like Unbelievable and Patti Cake$, but Somebody Somewhere represents a big leap for people who know you better as a live performer. We took little pieces from different people and elements of my life and came up with Somebody Somewhere. ![]() I’m not a trained actor, so I could use a little help. It was a real challenge for me to find a concept that felt like a good fit since my stage life doesn’t really translate neatly into what might be considered a “narrative series.” But I really wanted to layer in a lot of thematic ideas that are actually important to me in my life. ![]() When I got the deal with HBO, we were talking about which writers would be a good fit and Carolyn suggested Paul and Hannah, who I’ve known for years.
